As reported by Satellite Spotlight, Boeing puts the last in the series of four SkyMed radar satellites into orbit.
The Italian COSMO (Constellation of Small Satellites for Mediterranean basin Observation) SkyMed-4 satellite is launched into orbit on a Delta II rocket ( United Launch Alliance l competing with Falcon 9/SpaceX, Taurus II/Orbital Sciences [formerly owning ORBIMAGE, now GeoEye/Google/NGA], Ariane 4/french CNES, GSLV/indian ISRO, russian Soyuz-U and ) is a spaceflight launch system that uses rocket engines designed and manufactured by SpaceX. ) into low Earth orbit from Vandenberg Air Force Base. COSMO-SkyMed was designed by Thales Alenia Space for the Italian Space Agency and Italian Ministry of Defense. The system will take images of the Earth using an X-Band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR).
Meanwhile Avtec Systems, Inc., which now operates as part of Integral Systems' SATCOM Solutions Division, has been awarded a $5 million, five-year, Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract to replace the outdated Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) at Vandenberg.
The Executive Management of Integral Systems consists of former employees of The Boeing Company, (SES) New Skies Satellite program and BAE Systems. Integral Systems Europe is also responsible for geolocation service (Satellite Interference Geolocation) of Al Jazeera Sports Channel.
During mid November also Northrop Grumman Corp. and Lockheed announced specific contracts embedding synthetic aperture radar (SAR).
In Europe, since January 2008, TerraSAR-X [observation satellite using SAR], operates as a joint venture between German Aerospace Center DLR and EADS Astrium/ Infoterra GmbH. Their second project TanDEM-X (TerraSAR-X add-on for Digital Elevation Measurements) launched successfully on June 21, 2010 from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, also with the purpose of improving the Digital Elevation Model (DEM).

Three days after China officially unveils new photos of the moon, Iridium Communications Inc. [formerly partnering with the BinLadin family], announces to upgrade the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) Enhanced Mobile Satellite Service (EMSS) Gateway in Hawaii.
[Iridium NEXT is officially financed by nine banks incl.Deutsche Bank AG, Banco Santander SA, BNP Paribas, Credit Industriel et Commercial, Unicredit Bank Austria AG etc. and works openly with Thales Alenia Space and SpaceX.]

Bloomberg News reports that Thales Alenia Space, a joint venture between Thales SA and Finmeccanica SpA, is building the first constellation of eight medium-earth orbit Ka-band satellites for O3b, the statement said. The launch by Arianespace, the world’s biggest commercial satellite launcher, is set for the first half of 2013 from French Guiana.
O3b, also known as "Other 3 billion Networks Limited", gets its main funding from banks and investors including SES SA and Google Inc.
Other investors in O3b include John Malone’s [aka "Darth Vader"] Liberty Global Inc. and HSBC Principal Investments [UK].
Liberty Global owns 55% interest in AUSTAR [Australian telecommunications company] and 50% of Telenet (Belgium).
Through Chellomedia it has a 50% stake in MGM Networks in the USA, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy earlier this month.

Officially starting in October 2009, The European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS), a satellite based augmentation system (SBAS) under development by the European Space Agency, the European Commission and EUROCONTROL, is intended to supplement the GPS, GLONASS and Galileo systems and make commercial service available.

Israel increases their space plans with India. A second synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite, dubbed TecSAR-2, is planned for late 2011. Israel is also selected by the French Space Agency CNES to build the satellite bus and payload for Project Venus, a multispectral satellite mission.
Furthermore a much larger program, in cooperation with the Italian Space Agency, a prospective two-satellite program, dubbed Leonardo, is planned for 2012, but still awaits approval.

While the whole world is following the Incidents in Egypt, the long-ruling leader of Kazakhstan signed into law a measure allowing early presidential elections. Elections were to be held in 2012, but President Nursultan Nazarbayev unexpectedly called for an early vote.
The measure Nazarbayev signed allows for the vote to be held on two months' notice.
Meanwhile TechNews Daily reports a new Directed Energy Weapon for Prison guards, which works as an invisible laserlike beam.
The beam-emitting machine, is known as the Assault Intervention Device (AID), built by Raytheon.
In the same week, EADS announced, to offer a "Star Wars"-Helmet, with a number of sensors linked to the aircraft's computer-enabled systems,

European Space Defense Contractor Thales Alenia Space, is to serve as satellite integrator and test partner for Iridium NEXT.
Ironically Iridium -once also linked via shareholders to the BinLadin Family Group, was one of the rare telephone services which worked on 9/11, nearby Ground Zero.

The Automated Transfer Vehicle Johannes Kepler is launched on a specially modified launcher, the Ariane 5ES from Europe's spaceport in French Guiana. Launch was conducted by Arianespace on behalf of the European Space Agency.
Ariane 5 rockets are also manufactured under the authority of the European Space Agency (ESA) plus the Centre National d'Etudes Spatiales (CNES). Astrium, an EADS company, is the prime contractor for the vehicles, leading a consortium of sub-contractors.

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency [MDA] announces a $40 million contract with european Thales Alenia Space.
The contract is for the MDA Communications group to provide a total of 486 high-performance Ka-band cross link and feeder link antennas for the Iridium NEXT satellites which will eventually replace the world’s farthest reaching communications network, Iridium.
Following up on this news, 2 days later Thales also announces to choose danish LDS V994 Shake-system (Brüel & Kjær) for a turkish Satellite Testing program. Thales is also in charge of EGNOS, the european GPS program , via the European Space Agency (ESA) .
